There are ten different Birkman Interests that are generated from your responses to the occupational questions on the questionnaire. As you begin to study each Interest and its corresponding activities, remember that they do not always translate to skill, but represent important motivatorsInterests and their associated colors are:

Birkman Interests are helpful for having employees compare how much they enjoy certain activities, compared to those around them. Interests are scored from 1 to 99, with the exact number telling you what percentage of people have less interest than you in that particular area.

Interests Scores

Here are the implications for each score:

1 - 10%   Shows an intense lack of interest. You don't like being involved in these types of activities, and may be uncomfortable when this kind of activity continues for a long period of time. As these activities may drain your energy, try to delegate them as often as possible.
11 - 49%  Indicates less interest in that area compared to most people.
50% Is the "average" interest—you are neither strongly interested nor disinterested in these activities.
51 - 89%

Indicates more interest in that area than most people.

90 - 99%   Shows an intense interest, even a need to be involved in this activity, either personally or professionally. This means you may be unhappy and feel unfulfilled without some of this activity in your life.

Common Questions

Can I have a low score on something that I am good at and vice versa?

Yes! Remember that Birkman Interests do not equate to skill, but rather how much you enjoy a certain activity. You may be good at something, but have little interest in actually doing that activity, resulting in a low score.

How important are Birkman Interests scores?

The scores for each Interest are very important—they reveal what activities motivate and energize you, and what activities you may want to avoid. High scores (anything over 75) show where you have a strong interest. In fact, these activities help you feel fulfilled—they drive and energize you. Mid-range scores are activities that you are not necessarily attracted to, but also don't have to avoid. Low scores (scores less than 25) are areas that you may want to avoid. It's important to note that Interests can be important for your chosen field of work. However, if they are not met in your occupation, you can enjoy them as hobbies.
